Different types of flat burrs

Mis à jour : 12 sept. 2020

What we know about the burrs of the coffee grinder are always flat burr and conical burr. And so many articles about the differences and pros and cons of each other. Debates about them always happen among enthusiasts. Rare people know that there are different kinds of flat burrs that will affect the results too.

So here I will show you our experience of the four kinds of flat burr.

For now, we have known that they are traditional flat burr, ghost burr(masticating burr), block burr, smooth flat burr. The photos of them are as below:

Traditional flat burr: It is one of the most common burrs that we know in the coffee grinding industry. The other is the conical burr. They are all very good grinding tools. The traditional flat burr has very sharp and long edges to crush and slice the coffee beans.

Ghost burr(masticating burr): This kind of flat burr owns the special edges like teeth. There are small metal cubes crowded on the burr surface. It uses more crushing power over slicing. The process is similar to the teeth chewing food. So it is called masticating burr too.

Block burr: This burr has six long cubes distributed evenly on the round burr, besides it also owns the edges on the burr surface. The edges are not sharp but very smooth. When the grinder is running, the coffee beans will be ground more by crushing powder than slicing.

Smooth flat burr: This burr is very similar to the traditional flat burr. The only difference is that the edges are all smooth. So it is obvious that the grinding process combines more crushing than slicing.

In a theory, the crushing process is not controllable which causes nonuniform particles like very small powders. The slicing process ensures the more similar particles outlet. And the gap between two burrs determined the adjustable fineness range of the grinder. So the big particles outlet can be controlled but not the small particles.

I don't know if it's totally accurate. It seems to make sense in some fields. So I will try them if I have a chance. The only burr we lack is the block burr because it's so rare in my city. I will update the blog when I have all kinds of flat burrs
